What is court reporting?
Court Reporting is the responsibility of the court reporter to create the transcripts of conversations which include legal proceedings, trials, legal depositions etc, the accounts of these discussions, whether they be legal or broadcast entertainment,and require a legal form of transcript covering the words used in the event. And that’s where the reporter comes into play. Sometimes, the account of words in correspondence, records, administrative legal dealings are all in the hands of the court reporter and play a very important role in our judicial system. As they are responsible for the accurate translation for legal records, many reporters also have the duties of helping judges, attorneys and administrators in searching for records of official transcripts and making some suggestions in the dialogue with these legal professionals. Since 2006 court reporters have also been high demand in utilizing closed captioning and Realtime translating services that assist the deaf and hard of hearing in viewing what is actually said in broadcasts or in other television or video transmissions.
Court reporting really comes in many different types. The most common being steno type, which is the task of the stenographer (another name for court reporter,) who uses a steno type machine and documents all the statements and dialogue in a court room or legal proceeding. The steno machine uses the symbols that represent a combination of letters that represent sounds, words, or phrases. The symbols then are electronically translated and displayed in Realtime reporting, another form of court reporting. The steno type machine is linked to the computers, and this translation of words and representations happens in real time. You’ll often see this within different television programs. As you might string of text at the bottom of television screen as the Realtime reporter keys in symbols. The spoken word immediately comes into frame on the screen.
If you’re familiar with voice writing, this is the type of reporting, that is done. When a court reporter speaks into this device called a voice silencer. It looks like a many mask contains a microphone and the reporter uses handhold this to his face reporter repeats the testimony and conversations during the legal meetings or courtroom settings. And this mask actually prevents any kind of sound transmuted in disrupting the testimony. Then as everything is said by the judges and witnesses, attorneys, or other individuals in the proceeding. This is all recorded by voice and the reporter is also responsible for recording any kind of emotional reactions and then they have to actually assimilate all this information into a transcript.
As you can see court reporting in its many facets really allows for a student to go in many different career paths as a court reporter. Whether that be in the halls of a courtroom on a state municipal building or supreme court level or in the back room offices of a lawyer taking legal dictation.
